Darkness in a Different Light

Fates Warning return after a hiatus that lasted nearly a decade. I skimmed through a couple of reviews, listened to the sample of "A Thousand Fires" and purchased the album immediately after.

What a great release this is. The return of Frank Aresti uplifts the guitar riffs and solos, much like what we've heard on the brilliant Arch/Matheos record. The interplay between him and Jim Matheos is terrific to listen to - a good pair of headphones comes highly recommended. Bobby Jarzombek takes over the drums from Mark Zonder. The drumming is another highlight - incredibly complex even in the simplest of grooves.

If you're looking for a heavy riff-oriented progressive metal record, get this - it's what made Fates Warning leaders of the genre.
