Sam Solomon is done with social media buttons:
I’m a minimalist. When it comes to web design, I value white space, typography and function. People come to your site for the writing, which is why a focus on these elements will almost always result in a good user experience. Adding non-essential elements to a page reduces signal and creates noise.
A social media button is a cheap thumbs-up your work can do without. I removed them from my site some time ago. Their relevance is further diminished in a world where traffic increasingly originates from mobile devices with browsers that have built-in sharing functionality.
If people really love your content, they’ll share it.
Between user experience and potential social network traffic, choose the former. Work on making the content and reading experience great.
